All children and youth deserve options for fun, healthy play and physical activity. And kids love bikes and nature. So why not combine the two? It is a powerful and inspiring combination; riding mountain bikes exposes young people to nature while they have fun and get some exercise.
We are working to launch a Trips for Kids mountain bike riding chapter for the Portland region!
Trips for Kids helps disadvantaged children and youth discover the joy of mountain biking, gain access to and understand the value of nature, build self-esteem and develop healthy lifestyles. Over 85 Trips for Kids chapters help kids to reach their highest potential by supporting lessons in confidence building, achievement and environmental awareness through the development of practical skills, and the simple act of having fun. Operating in the United States, Canada, Israel and Sierra Leone, Trips for Kids (TFK) has opened the world of cycling to over 140,500 at-risk youth since 1988 through mountain bike rides and Earn-A-Bike programs.

The original inspiration for Trips for Kids came in 1986, when founder and director Marilyn Price was pedaling up Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California, gazing at San Francisco. As a frequent volunteer at St. Anthony’s Dining Room in the heart of the city, she thought how wonderful it would be if these kids could join her. Most had never seen their city from that perspective. Most had never challenged themselves physically. All spent their days surrounded by cement as well as constant exposure to drugs, violence and gang involvement. It was then that Marilyn's vision for Trips for Kids began to take shape. Encouraged by success in San Francisco and by others interested in starting similar programs, in 1999, Trips for Kids began supporting the development of chapters around the United States and around the world.
