The Oregon Interscholastic Cycling League was founded in 2017 as a non-profit 501(c)3 Project League of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). We facilitate youth development through the sport of mountain biking for 6-12 graders and provide the education, training, licensing, and insurance for coaches and volunteers. We also produce high-quality mountain bike events that emphasize the value of participation, camaraderie, positive sporting behavior, and well-being over competition.
Our History
In 2016 Camas, Washington resident and bike shop owner Ed Fischer met Portland resident and full-time youth bicycling advocate Robert Alan Ping at a Northwest Trail Alliance meeting and Robert was hooked! They began the process of preparing and applying for Oregon to become a NICA league. During 2016 and 2017 Robert traveled around Oregon cheerleading the league and held community meetings in Bend, Hood River, Portland, Eugene and Oakridge, and began meeting with national NICA staff. By spring 2017 over 150 people had signed up to become supporters, including potential coaches, bike shop owners, teachers and parents. The application for a league was submitted in spring 2017, and was officially accepted by NICA that summer.
In fall 2017, Heather Wolfgang a former San Francisco NICA team coach, and her husband, Kurt a former NICA staffer, moved to Portland and Heather began getting involved with the Oregon league process. In winter 2017 Heather became the League Director.
The first Oregon NICA race series took place in fall 2018, and the rest is history!
